Happy New Year from the Alberta Invasive Species Council.  The Board of Directors and Staff are excited about 2015.  AISC plans to engage more Albertans to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species.

THE INVADER NEWSLETTER

The new Anti-Spam legislation came into effect in 2014.  We are actively re-building our distribution list.  How can you help?  Encourage your friends, enemies, contacts and co-workers to go to the AISC website (www.abinvasives) and sign up for the newsletter.  THE INVADER newsletter is published regularly and will keep you up to date with the latest news on AISC and invasive species.  If you do not want to continue receiving THE INVADER please "unsubscribe" at the end of this email.  Looking for more immediate information.  Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

AISC Board of Directors

The Board is composed of 16 members; four each from Industry, Provincial Gov't, Other Gov't (Federal, local, urban, rural) and Other (NGOs, academia, members).  They have 4 meetings/year.  It is a very positive group with lots of energy.  They are committed making a difference.  At the Annual General Meeting, to be held in Lacombe AB on March 12th, 2015, the following positions will be elected by the membership.  The three positions are Provincial Gov't Alternate Director, Provincial Gov't Director and Other Gov't Alternate Director. The Provincial Gov't Alternate Director position is currently vacant due to a resignation. The Board exercised their option and appointed Martin Robillard (ESRD) as the Provincial Gov't Director and Luc Rainville (NEB) as the Other Gov't Alternate Director.  Both appointments are temporary and expire at the AGM.  The AISC membership will either confirm these appointments or elect new candidates.  AISC is accepting nominations for all three positions.  Nomination forms must be submitted prior to the AGM.  Please email info@abinvasives.ca for a nomination form.

 AISC Casino

AISC is commited to working at the Palace Casino at West Edmonton Mall on April 1st and 2nd, 2015.  This is a very important source of funding for AISC.  We are looking for volunteers to work the daytime and evening shifts.  You must be 18 years or older and have no criminal record.  No experience/training is required; there is on-the-job training.  Meals and travel expenses will be covered by AISC earned casino funds.  Volunteer your time to ensure AISC remains an active voice in the fight against invasive species.  Send us an email with your commitment at info@abinvasives.ca  THANK YOU !!

Sustainable Forestry Initiative

On January 7th, SFI introduced the 2015 - 2019 Standards and Rules. For more INFORMATION

The following is from Forest Management Standard Principles

2. Forest Productivity and Health

To provide for regeneration after harvest and maintain the productive

capacity of the forestland base, and to protect and maintain longterm

forest and soil productivity. In addition, to protect forests from

economically or environmentally undesirable levels of wildfire,

pests, diseases, invasive exotic plants and animals, and other

damaging agents and thus maintain and improve long-term forest

health and productivity.

This is very significant as over 240 million acres in North America are certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Standards.  WEBSITE

A very good initiative by the Forestry industry!
